Today Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia X2, the company's 2nd Windows Mobile powered smartphone, and its first to make use of the new Windows Mobile 6.5 platform that will be available starting in October of this year. As was the case with the X1, Sony Ericsson is pushing its panels touchscreen user interface on the X2, which ships with 14 pre-installed home screen panels while 16 others are available for download.

The main highlights of the Xperia X2 include its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and, of course, the previously mentioned touchscreen display, which measures 3.2 inches across the diagonal and offers 800 x 480 pixel resolution. A new 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus is also on board, a significant upgrade from the 3.2 megapixel unit found on the X1. Geo-tagging and touch focus are also supported by the camera. Sony Ericsson also notes that business users will like the phone's TV-out function, so that docs and presentations can be viewed on a large display.

The Xperia X2 makes use of Windows Media Player for music, and even features built-in stereo speakers. Sony Ericsson's PlayNow Arena is featured as well, as is Sony Ericsson's own media player application. Bluetooth wireless connections can be used for both stereo headphones and headsets alike. Windows Mobile 6.5 adds in the new Internet Explorer web browser for true desktop-like browsing, and of course the device supports push email and contact/calendar synching thanks to Exchange Activesync support.

Sony Ericsson's WiFi-capable Xperia X1 features quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSPA support, for world roaming. It will be available in early Q4 of 2009 in black and silver color schemes.
